Statement on Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade
This statement is attributed to Rep. Zakiya Summers:
“I join women across the country in feeling deeply devastated by the Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade. With this decision, the Supreme Court has dismantled the constitutional protections for abortion that have existed for nearly 50 years. Politicians and Justices have dehumanized women into second-class status. After today’s decision, Mississippi and so many states are on the brink of turning the clock back on our fundamental rights. The question that lingers for me is: what could be next?
“What’s worst is that today’s ruling will also have deadly consequences, with the harm falling hardest on Black women and other people of color who already face a severe maternal mortality crisis that is the worst in the same states that are determined to ban abortion, particularly in Mississippi where maternal health outcomes are horrible.
“While this decision is a huge blow, we cannot afford to stay quiet. We must fight back. Together, we have the power to take back our freedom to make our own decisions about our bodies and futures.
“Our ability to control our bodies and futures is on the ballot this November and every single election. Our rights are on the line.”
